Chlorination: phytotoxicity and effects on the production and quality of Lactuca sativa var. Mantecosa grown in a closed, soil-less system Phyton
Premuzic,Z; Palmucci,HE; Tamborenea,J; Nakama,M.
The addition of chlorine constitutes an economical disinfection method for closed, soil-less systems. Three quantities of sodium hypochlorite (0.55, 5.5 and 11 ppm) were applied to closed, soil-less greenhouse- grown lettuce (Lactuca sativa), to study the effect on its production (fresh weight and dry matter) and some commercial and nutritional quality factors (phytotoxicity, Vitamin C, nitrates). Sodium hypochlorite was weekly added within the nutrient solution, and the chemical properties (pH, EC and chlorides) of the recycled solution were measured. Damage to leaves was evaluated 15 days before harvest. Chlorination produced different effects regarding both production and quality. All treatments presented plants with excellent commercial weight,...

Ultrasound efficiency in relation to sodium hypochlorite and filtration adsorption in microbial elimination in a water treatment plant BABT
Bello,Antonio Roberto Crystal; Angelis,Dejanira de Franceschi; Domingos,Roberto Naves.
Processes like ultrasound, chlorination and filtration-adsorption were compared to eliminate microorganisms and to adjust established parameters of public drinking water. A mini water treatment plant (WTP-CB), in pilot scale, was projected and built to evaluate each process influence as: decontamination, coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. Total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli and heterotrophic bacteria and physic/chemical parameters were quantified from water. Ultrasound, chlorination and filtration-adsorption were efficient to inactivate and/or eliminate bacteria. Ultrasound decontamination in addition to coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation and filtration, could be considered as an alternative treatment water solution where...

การลดเชื้อ Campylobacter jejuni ในซากไก่ด้วยคลอรีนและโอโซน Thai Agricultural
Panrapee Iamtaeweejarloen; Pravate Tuitemwong; Jirawat Kantakrienwong; Kooranee Tuitemwong.
Objectives of this study were to investigate the process sensitivity to Campylobacter spp. and to assess the reduction efficiency of ozonation and chlorination in chilling step of the poultry process using data derived from mCCDA plating and SimPlate MPN methods. Samples of 80 were collected from 4 process steps in the processing plant (scalding, plucking, inside outside washing, and chilling). Numbers of Campylobacter spp. on mCCDA at the respective steps were 3.35, 3.20, 2.68 and 0.20 logCFU/ml, while the SimPlate MPN had 2.54, 2.48, 2.31 and 0.84 log CFU/ml, respectively. Chilling is the most sensitive process to reduce the number of bacteria on both media. Chlorination at 1.5 ppm reduced Campylobacter spp. by 97.46% and 58.62% on mCCDA and SimPlate...
